The Problem: Discrimination
Here’s the problem: unemployed job applicants are being discriminated against in record numbers. Recently, as reported by the Wall Street Journal, there is a trend reported among businesses to hire only those people who are already employed elsewhere.
This does not mean businesses are hiring the best candidates; only those who survived downsizing or replaced an effective, productive downsized employee for less money. This short-sighted methodology fails economically, ethically and morally. It also fails our society as business is the only true solution for our current massive unemployment problem.
This discriminatory hiring practice has likely been in existence for a length of time, but now that certain employers feel it acceptable to publicize the practice in job postings, it’s time to stand up and denounce it. It’s time to recognize the employers who make ethical hiring decisions based on one’s qualifications – not based on unsubstantiated perception of one’s employment status.
